It is said that you can either be a villain or a hero. Now, Christian Bale has indeed turned villain, this time in Marvel in Thor: Love and Thunder. The antagonist is strong. The script follows the comic book’s storyline and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) is returning. Taika Waititi’s quirky humor is obvious. However, Love and Thunder, even though it’s an effective standalone , doesn’t compare to the previous Thor sequel, Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

Thor has been a vital part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for more than a decade however his stand-alone films are either not hitting the target or have missed it completely. Thor: The Dark World (2013) was a disappointing entry. Thor: The Origins Story (2011) was a solid beginning. However, Thor: Ragnarok 2017 is sure to be among everyone’s most-watched five MCU films. The anticipation was high prior to the release due to the return of the Hemsworth/Taika waititi collaboration.
Gorr (Bale), God who seeks to destroy all gods attacks New Asgard to steal Stormbreaker. Thor must stop the god butcher by joining up with Tessa Thompson, Korg (Waititi) and Jane Foster, his ex-girlfriend, who is now Mighty Thor. The story is easy to follow, unlike in Marvel’s recent films and the performances are good in the film. Hemsworth plays the title character, who is suffering from middle-age crisis. But Bale as well as Portman are both outstanding. As evidence of Bale’s abilities in the scene before the title credit is. Gorr could well have been the next Thanos for MCU that is in desperate need of good supervillains, and Bale has a distinct that eerie quality to the character but there’s no amount more.
On the other hand, Portman, who makes her return to the Marvel world after having missed the previous two Thor films, is the cancer-stricken ex-girlfriend selected by Mjolnir. Marvel seems keen to hand the mantles of Hawkeye and Hulk to women characters. I expected the Mighty Thor would be similar to the checklist for representation. The film tells a touching tale about an astrophysicist who is able to display her biceps on more occasions than one.
Marvel does its own flexing too, through all the cameos featured in this film. We also get to see the Guardians of the Galaxy cast, including Sam Neill and Matt Damon reprise their roles as Thor Ragnarok’s Loki, Odin and Thor as well as Thor. Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone are also being portrayed as Hela and as the director for an Asgardian play. Waititi, who has since Ragnarok directed the Oscar-winning Jojo Rabbit, is back in his favorite genre. There are hilarious ideas such as two noisy goats, Korg’s narration of Thor’s story, Thor doing leg-splitsand Valkyrie becoming the brand ambassador for Old Spice…
The central theme is that Thor is looking for his Mjolnir but is scared of the jealousy of Stormbreaker. These gags, although effective, come at the expense of deep emotions, and reveal the wafer-thin plot as well. Thor: Love and Thunder explores a variety of types of love, from father-daughter bonds to complicated romances between distant lovers… There is a connection between Gorr losing respect towards Rapu and Thor getting disillusioned with Zeus (played in this film by Russell Crowe). The possibilities are endless however…
There are many movie references like Harry Potter and Interstellar, and also Easter eggs. We see a glimpse of the god of death, Falligar, taken straight out of comics. We can see Hemsworth in the classic Thor costumes that comic book readers will recognise. As he fights Zeus, Thor reveals his true colors. We also see a tattoo saying “RIP Loki which has the helmet of the trickster etched on our Viking’s back. Then we are introduced to the deadly Necrosword and also given the fact that Mjolnir and Stormbreaker seem to have a mind of their own It’s intriguing to see more weapons being shown to have the ability to manipulate individuals.
The scene we were shown with Shang Chi’s ten rings and Ms. Marvel’s dazzling bangle as well as the Ebony blade during the Eternals post-credits scene. The phrase “Gods won’t empower you however, they will utilize the power of God to help you” from the new show by Marvel, Moonknight, feels very familiar. There’s an interesting story about Valkyrie losing her beloved girlfriend during war, and Korg falling in love another Kronan man.
It is easy to think of Ragnarok’s color palette in the opening half, but most of the second half is set in the dark realm of black and white. The action scenes that are monochrome may be quite enjoyable but it is imperative to remember.
Hemsworth as Thor will be here for a long time though, and that’s an enormous relief for MCU people who’ve seen the original Avengers or even sacrifice their lives, or hang up their boots.
